Sales tax rates across Canada
The current rate on a general purchase in every jurisdiction, and what it comes to on $100.00. Basic groceries are zero-rated everywhere.
Basic groceries are zero-rated across Canada, so a grocery run is taxed differently from a general purchase. MapleTrack applies that automatically when you categorise a receipt.
Common questions
Which province has the highest sales tax?
Quebec charge the most, at 15.47% on a general purchase. Alberta, Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut charge only the federal GST at 5%, the lowest in the country.
Is there sales tax on groceries in Canada?
Basic groceries are zero-rated nationwide, so bread, milk, produce and most unprepared food carry no GST, HST, PST or QST in any province. Prepared foods, snacks and non-food items are taxed at the normal rate.
How do I find the tax inside a price that already includes it?
Divide the total by 1 plus the tax rate to get the subtotal, then subtract the subtotal from the total. The calculator above does it for you and always shows Subtotal, Tax and Total separately.
Are these rates up to date?
Yes. Rates follow the published CRA and Revenu Quebec schedules and are reviewed whenever a jurisdiction changes them. Figures here are planning estimates, not tax advice or a filing.
